CHRISNLUCKY GATE OPENER
I used the information on this site and believe anyone can create a
auto gate opener with this method. Along the way i also developed a
few tricks of my own. I believe each install is unique and will have
it's own individual bugs to be worked out. The following page is here
to help some have a smoother install. I feel using the info found here
and at chris's site anyone attempting this endeavor will have a most
satisfying success.
I had been mulling the idea of this type of gate opener in my head
for quite some time. I did not want to spend hundreds of dollars on
a gate opener motor and felt that a garage door opener would
certainly do the trick. Searching the web i came across chris's site
and decided to use his method. I went to my local hardware store
and luckily came across a 50% off sale on openers. I bought 2 belt
drive units, always feeling good with a backup. The belt drive
seemed the best choice at the time because of lack of metal parts
IE chain. So oiling would not be an issue. I am also out  for ease of
maintenance. The screw type has grease running through the
entire drive and would certainly gunk with dirt after some time (of
course some type of housing around the drive would prevent this
but i felt the belt was the way to go.

Some problems i encountered

the unit had a drive that needed to be bolted together. Certainly
not as strong as a one unit piece, and because of this the entire
drive unit had to be secured to angle iron welded to 1 inch pipe
and concreted 15" in the ground. This stiffened the unit quite a bit.

Still there was quite a bit of slap and because of this the unit kept
reversing itself. After correcting the door open and close
sensitivity this problem was fixed.

Because of the weight of the gate i fixed a wheel to the front end
of the gate to ride the ground when closing
Some enhancements i developed

I was also able to increase the range of the stock remote from 150' to
over 350 by extending the antenna wire with an 8' length of coaxial wire
used for cable TV. Make sure only the copper core of both wires are
touching. The coaxial cable has shielding strands that if touching the
copper could hurt the remote range

Because i own a metal fabrication company i decided to build a

would like dimentions to build your own let me know.

I  used the opener light to power the spot light sitting on the
opener case. the spot light goes on when the opener is engaged.
